Echoing independent inspectors, we have repeatedly warned the government about the grave problems across the UK's detention centres, including:

High levels of anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide
Overcrowding
Mistreatment by staff
Dangerous delays to healthcare
Barriers to quality legal advice
Prison-like and inhumane conditions

Despite this, the government persists with its plans to expand the detention network by reopening controversial detention centres and exposing even more people to the danger of detention.
