Detention centres are the hidden side of our immigration system. But, in 2023-24, the Home Office locked 18,918 people in immigration detention.
Echoing independent inspectors, we have repeatedly warned the government about the grave problems across the UK's detention centres, including:
- High levels of anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide
- Overcrowding
- Mistreatment by staff
- Dangerous delays to healthcare
- Barriers to quality legal advice
- Prison-like and inhumane conditions
Despite this, the government persists with its plans to expand the detention network by reopening controversial detention centres and exposing even more people to the danger of detention.
By sending your MP our latest briefing on the realities of detention, you can help make sure they're ready to take action and end this injustice.
